Let’s Get Ready for Kindergarten

Let’s Get Ready for Kindergarten!
Posted on 07/28/2021

MNPS is excited to welcome the incoming kindergarten class (Class of 2034) on August 10th. We want families to feel welcomed and prepared for their child’s transition to kindergarten.

MNPS families should receive information directly from their child’s school regarding school specific information (uniforms, school supplies, orientations, etc.). Families can also visit the MNPS Back to School webpage and their child’s school webpage for information.

K-Readiness Tips

  • Read with your child every day. Before you read, ask your child to predict what will happen. After you read, discuss the

    kids playing

    book with your child.

  • Practice counting objects from one to 20: Count out objects like cookies, pebbles, or crayons. Ask your child to bring you two spoons, one apple, and four books. Help your child learn to recognize numerals one to 10.

  • Encourage your child to describe, answer and talk in complete sentences.

  • Help your child to begin recognizing the alphabet, both capital and lowercase letters.

  • Work on skills to support your child’s independence. Teach him or her to dress for play, school, or bedtime. Have your child put away clothing and sort toys. Have your child wash their hands and use the bathroom independently.

  • Talk positively with your child about school. Continue to discuss with your child all the good things he or she will experience in school.

  •  Discuss the different emotions (happy, sad, excited, lonely, etc.), so your child can become familiar with them in order to recognize and express how they feel.

  • Establish healthy morning and bedtime routines prior to the start of school.

  • Let your child know who will take them and pick them up from school. Pass by your child’s school site so they can become familiar with their school.

  • Determine if you will need before and after care services. Your school may be able to assist you in identifying services within or near your school.
